Before taking on their current translation assignment in the States in 1977, Bob and Joan served for many years "in the field" in Africa. They first went to Angola in the mid-50's to work at Catota Bible Institute. After 20 years in Angola, they returned to the United States in August of 1975 for a six-week furlough, expecting to return again to Angola; but, with an ongoing war, they were sent to Luampa in Zambia. There they worked 10 years with refugees from Angola of the same tribe and language which they had served in that country.

While no longer in the field full-time, their ministry continues today. Having completed commentaries on the book of Daniel, the book of Revelation, and the 'prison epistles', Bob is currently working on a book in the Luchazi language on Women in the Bible.  Bob and Joan's son Calvin and his wife Shelly, both graduates from Columbia Bible College, await work permits for Namibia where they are to continue on in the writing, publication and distribution of Christian books for Pastors and Bible teachers in the Luchazi language.

~~from the June 2009 newsletter~~     One last thing for you to be praying about: Calvin will be visiting different areas in regards to the Pastors' Book Set project that he is working on and both will be doing more printing of their books (Calvin's and Bob's) for use in Angola, Namibia, and South Africa. If anyone is interested in helping to support this literature work in the Luchazi language, you can send gifts to SIM USA, PO Box 7900, Charlotte, NC 28241-7900. Be sure to designate it for R. Brain Ministry Funds. Many thanks.

~~from the September 2009 newsletter!!
By God's grace the PBS has been approved and now fund raising has begun. If God has challenged you to give to this project to provide books to pastors in Namibia please contact SIM (address below). The project name is Namibian Pastors Book Set project # 94366.

SIM (Serving in Mission) is an interdenominational mission agency serving over 40 countries in Asia, Africa, and South America. Since 1893, SIM was called Sudan Interior Mission. Once other groups working outside of Africa merged with SIM, the acronym was kept and SIM used the name Society for International Ministries. In 2000, SIM took its current name.

SIM's primary goals are evangelism and church planting activities supported by a wide range of ministries including health care, development, education, translation and media, all helping carry the message of Christ to a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world. Opportunities for the gospel are wide open as areas that were once inaccessible become reachable - and are asking for help!
